FRIENDLY SERVICE COMMITTEEWhat is Friendly Service? It is a service that functions throughout New York State, not just in the Western Zone. It works to assist our retirees who are shut-ins and/or ninety years of age or older. Also, when possible, Friendly Service helps any member of New York State Retired Teachers' Association who is in need. There are almost 600 retirees listed in our Friendly Service file. They receive frequent attention from volunteer workers, who spend much time visiting and telephoning. These volunteers contribute a great service and they enjoy doing it for others. Greeting cards are sent at least twice a year to all members of Western Zone who are 90 years of age or older. We are proud to say that we have about 400 members who are 90 years young and older, including 20 members who are 100 and over! This year we have been blessed by the NYSRTA Insurance Fund, which again made funds available for our distribution. We are also extremely grateful to one of our unit chairs, who gave us a large donation. These monies were used for paying dues, helping to purchase a hearing aid, assisting with health insurance payments, and supplying needed food. As you can see, ACTION is our KEY. This makes Friendly Service such an important part of the New York State Retired Teachers' Association. "Thanks" is such a little word but it is one that reaches out to our workers for their excellent service. To all of them, our "Thanks" for all their help, cooperation, and services. Won't you join our Friendly Service Committee to help assist retired teachers in need? This is a way to serve others!
